Widening a Van de Wiele loom: 175 to 240 cm
Most Van de Wiele looms leave the factory at 175 cm. The widths we extend them to, what changes besides the width, and when it beats buying another loom.
Most Van de Wiele velvet and carpet looms leave the factory at 175 cm. That width suits a lot of work, but not every rug size or every fabric a mill wants to weave. When a mill needs wider fabric, the first idea is often to buy a wider loom. There is a second option: extend the loom you already have.
What loom extension means
We rework Van de Wiele looms so that they weave wider fabric. The working widths we build are 200, 210, 240, 260 and 300 cm. Larger carpet and rug sizes then run on the same loom.
More than width: the shed opening
Width is not the only thing that can change. We can also increase the shed opening, the reed’s range of movement. A larger shed opening raises the loom’s colour capacity and the fabric density it can reach.
You can see this in our listings: one Van de Wiele VME22 with a Stäubli CX960 jacquard had its shed opening revised to 11 cm for high-pile and coloured weaving.
When extension makes sense
Extension is worth a look when:
- you already run a Van de Wiele loom that works well and that your weavers know,
- the products you want need fabric wider than 175 cm,
- you would rather keep your production know-how on the floor than start again with a new machine.
Extending the machine you have costs far less than a new loom.

Don’t forget the harness
