VMM32, MPS32, VME22, MPS22: what listings show

Four Van de Wiele model names come up again and again in the used market. Here is what the machines we have listed tell you about years, widths, jacquards and the work they were set up for.

If you are looking for a used Van de Wiele loom, four model names keep coming up: MPS32, VMM32, VME22 and MPS22. Buyers often ask us which one they should look for.

This is not a factory spec sheet. It is what the machines we have listed and sold show: the years, working widths, jacquards and the work they were set up for. It gives you a realistic picture of what is out there.

MPS32: the most common model in our listings

The MPS32 looms we have listed were built between 1983 and 1991, in 175, 200 and 210 cm working widths.

They came with Stäubli jacquards from 3,072 to 6,144 hooks: LX1600B, CX960, LX3200 and LX3201. They were set up for 3-colour Italian velvet, Belgian-style carpets of 200 × 300 cm, 3-colour prayer rugs and lightweight carpet. One 1985 machine was running at 200–220 rpm with 8 IRO feeders and a colour apparatus.

MPS32 looms also appear as part of complete plants, sold together with yarn transfer, winding and packaging machines.

VMM32: wider, with larger jacquards

The VMM32 looms we have listed are from 1993 to 1996, in 175, 200, 210 and 240 cm working widths.

Their jacquards are larger: Stäubli LX3200 and CX1090 with 8,192 to 12,288 hooks. They were set up for velvet, lightweight carpet, velour carpet, and upholstery and decorative fabrics. The 240 cm machine has pile modules and a 6-door creel that takes 2 kg bobbins straight from the spinner.

VME22: jacquard or dobby

The VME22 looms we have listed are from 1992 and 1993, in 175 and 200 cm.

They come in two very different setups. One runs with a Stäubli CX960 jacquard (5,120 hooks) for 2-colour Italian velvet; its shed opening was revised to 11 cm for high-pile and coloured weaving. Others are dobby looms with 12 working frames, expandable to 16, running at 220 rpm on plain fabrics for piece dyeing. A sold 200 cm VME22 was set up for cam (dobby) weaving and was jacquard-ready.

MPS22: a 175 cm velvet loom

The MPS22 looms we have listed are 1990 machines in 175 cm, each with a Stäubli LX1600 jacquard from 2002 (5,120 hooks, M5 modules), a 6-door creel and 4 IRO feeders. They are set up for 3-colour Italian velvet at 160 cm fabric width.

What matters more than the model name

Two looms with the same model name can be very different machines. Before you compare models, compare these:

  • Working width. It decides the fabric width you can weave. Some looms can be widened; see our loom extension page.
  • Jacquard. Make, model, hook count and module type decide which designs you can weave.
  • Current setup. Number of colours, fabric width, creel and feeders. A loom already set up for your product is closer to production.
  • Condition. Ask for a video of the machine running and, if you can, inspect it on site.

Our checklist for buying a used Van de Wiele velvet loom goes through these points in detail.
